Beyond Words

Most of us love words. We read. We chat with friends. We write on Facebook and in emails. Words are even in our heads bouncing around in conversations with ourselves and in potential conversations with others. Yet words do not carry us the way sight, symbols, and sound can. Often there is deep meaning in scenes around us, in pictures, and in song. These experiences move us to a place past words. Like digging in or smelling fresh soil in spring, there is something about wordless perception that brings us beyond ourselves. Songs of praise and seeing God’s greatness in our mind’s eye is like that. Connecting to God this way brings us uniquely and freely to Him who creates all perception. It lifts us out of ourselves; out of our sometimes unending words, to experience ourselves with Him in sweet communion.
